SOMERSET fertility assessment and treatment

Background

Somerset CCG uses eligibility criteria original developed by the National Institute for Care and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and funds two cycles of IVF treatment to infertile couples. These guidelines were updated in February 2013 to include three new recommendations which were significantly different from earlier guidance.

If Somerset CCG were to introduce one or more of these new NICE recommendations it expects expenditure for fertility treatment to rise. For example, by introducing the recommendation to cut the length of time infertile couples must wait before they can ask for IVF treatment from three to two years.

However, with no additional funding available to Somerset CCG to meet this extra cost, the increase could be contained if the number of IVF treatment cycles were reduced from two to one. The reduction of treatment cycles would bring Somerset CCG’s IVF eligibility criteria into alignment with the majority of clinical commissioning groups the South West.
